A standard gauge is a physical standard for the calibration of a pneumatic measurement system or any related measurement system. To ensure its accuracy, the actual size of the gauge is usually verified by a high-precision comparator using a certified high-grade gauge block.

Single gauge system
A quantitative amplifier or display device is calibrated with a single gauge to indicate the zero position of the nominal size or tolerance value of the workpiece.
Dual calibration system
The maximum and minimum dimensions of the workpiece tolerance can be calibrated by two calibration gauges respectively.
For the single gauge system, the measurement outside the workpiece tolerance zone has no corresponding gauge to compare. The operator must rely on the straightness of the display device, which can accurately convert the difference between the actual dimensions into a positively determined reading. However, if the single calibration system is used, once the straightness of the display device is deviated, it will produce incorrect measurement values. This situation is particularly easy to appear in the machining of workpiece close to the edge of the tolerance zone.
